John Poon is a painter of great merit. Leaving behind the life as an instructor and administrator for the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, John and his family moved to Utah. John’s paintings have proven their quality over the years by persistently shining out from in and around the rest of John’s busy life, by becoming part of numerous collections, and by receiving national awards including Best Landscape in the highly competitive and prestigious national show, Arts for the Parks in Jackson, WY and Artists’ Choice at the Sonoma Plein Air. John is a plein air painter, painting out in the landscape of his Utah home, and rising above the restrictions of changing light and fleeting time and weather. He quickly finds the structure of a landscape. As a teacher, John is highly sought after by painters of every level.  Having focused on what he himself had learned from whom, John gives useful, impactful information to his students from coast to coast.  He has the ability to simplify the fields, mountains, clouds, and architecture into purposeful brushstrokes that express the striking beauty of a moment in time.
